The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has guidelines for Halloween costumes to ensure student safety and maintain a positive school environment:
- No demeaning costumes: Costumes should not be demeaning to any person or group based on age, disability, gender, gender identity, nationality, race, religion, or sexual orientation.
-
- No unsafe costumes: Costumes should not be unsafe or create a safety hazard. They should not impair a student's vision or movement.
-
- No weapons: No weapons or replica weapons are allowed at school.
-
- No masks that cover the face: Masks may not completely obscure a student's identity.
-
- No revealing costumes: Costumes should not be revealing, such as low-cut, French maid, nightwear, or bathing suits.
-
- No distracting costumes: Costumes should not cause a significant distraction to the school program.
-
- No caps or beanies: Hats, beanies, and hoods are not permitted indoors at school.
-
- Gender-neutral dress codes: All dress codes must be gender-neutral.
The LAUSD communicates student dress guidelines annually to students and parents/caregivers through the Parent-Student Handbook
